Prey for the Hunted

The Brooklyn Menswear label Yoko Devereaux has been speeding into New Yorks fashion consciousness since they arrived in 2000, and to exhibit their spring summer 2009 collection they used a back drop of fast cars  Manhattan’s Classic Car Club. The new collection aims to mix a bit or East Hampton with a dash of East Village. The looks seem to tell the story well, and the Classic Car venue adds to the luxury of the show.

Graham Watches have only been around 1995 when the parent company British Masters SA was founded by Swiss watchmaker Eric Loth. Graham created an identity for their watches by using large 47mm faces and made even bigger by their unique over sized left hand fast action chrono starters. They employ swiss mechanical movements and generally speaking they put out a very solid timepiece.

This is where many purist step in and bash Graham for trying to trade on a name they have no actual affiliation with. The name borrows from George Graham (1673-1751) who is considered to be the “father of the chronograph”  and the first watch maker inducted into the British Royal Society. For British Masters SA to simply adopt this history is contemptible and it would certainly steer me away from buying an $11,000 watch from them.

With a last name that is utterly impossible to spell much less say, Sasha Pivovarova takes down yet another fashion rag cover with a little help of graffiti giant KAWS. Fashion’s latest darling is no rookie, but this Russian born beauty is officially everywhere, after securing no less than six consecutive seasons as the face of Prada, and bombing countless covers, runway’s, and editorials, the girl is a freight train.  Although this post comes a bit late seeing that it is almost August first you should waste no time checking out I-D’s July offering, besides Sasha’s rockin Comme Des Garcons spread there’s a head of other cracker jacks for you. God i just wanna kiss her in that giant space between her eyes

In a room full of NYC’s hip-est hipsters gathered at the Bowery Ballroom you’d expect grumbles, sneers, and eye rolling if you announced that some middle aged Israeli dudes were going redefine the rock ‘n’ roll experience. Monotonix is out to blow minds and they are doing it one venue at a time. Having played some 300 shows since they started out in Tel Aviv in 2005 Monotonix have become known for setting themselves and their equipment on fire, stealing drinks from audience members to pour on themselves, and generally turning their shows into unabashed, frenzied dance parties. The band channels riff heavy influences Led Zeppelin, the Sonics, and Thin Lizzy to create raw, driving rock & roll.

Reading and listening to them on some lame blog is like saying watching porn is the same as sex. Take a listen and find out when they are coming to your city.

While I am a fan of Louis Vuitton and their previous colaboration with Takashi Murikami I am completely on the fence with the new Monogramouflage collection. Maybe it is the rediculous name or the fact that such a classic brand is doing something so kitchy, but I think I will pass on this collection even the coolest piece, the Keepall Duffle ($1,950). Look for Kanye to be rockin this hard sometime soon.

Converse is celebrating their 100th aniversary in 2008 and resleasing several models of the iconic Chuck Taylor to celebrate the occasion. These ultra limited edition Leather Jacket Chucks are estimated to sell for $385, if you can get your hands on ‘em. I would have never pegged Chuck Taylor as an old biker, but these definately look the part.

There is a great interview with Jay Mohr where talks about the best item he owns being his gold Rolex. He says he loves it  because when you are wearing a Rolex you can still get into a strip club even if you are wearing a sweat suit. While I think Jay is pretty funny this comment wreaks of the Douche-ness that comes from most dudes who own an expensive watch. For many It is a way to flash some cash and to speak a language that all gold digging broads understand.

While I am no horologist I have read enough to understand why some exceptional timepieces command astronomical asking prices. One such company that flys under the radars of your average rich douche bag is A. Lange & Söhne .
