Banksy, Art Superhero Unmasked

J.Brunhoff | July 28, 2008

Banksy Ballon

With a new comic book blockbusters coming out every six months it is clear that people are longing for superheros. In todays society we face a variety of villains from terrorists waging jihad, to imperialist countries conducting wars for oil, from Coporate villains profiting from the docile middle class, to our President who has vilified everything from the constitiution to common sense during his 8 year reign. Luckily we have a superhero among us in the form of the infamous "guerilla artist" Banksy .

Banksy has made a career as an artist using both superhero cunning and superhero anonymity. His graffiti career began around 1994 and as his works started gaining attention in the early 2000’s it only served to fueled his daring. Some of Banksy’s capers include painting giant murals on the wall of the west bank separating Israel and Palestine, leaving a manequin dressed as a Guantanamo Prisoner at Disney World, and hanging his own art in both the Tate and the Louvre.

Lewis Leathers

Legendary British leather makers Lewis Leathers has brought style elements from their classic boots to new kicks from Comme des Garcons.  Lewis leathers was founded in 1892 and started making quailty leather jackets for British Aviators during the war efforts of the 1930s. Building on their reputation for quality leather jackets Lewis started building motorcycle jackets, boots, and trousers all of which have become legendary.

See more examples of their colaboration with Japanese designers Comme des Garcons after the jump.

Damn you Crystal Antlers

fasterstill | July 26, 2008

After reading the praises heaped on Crystal Antlers by Pitchfork and others I figured i would give these Long Beach rockers a try. I am normally opposed to rock ‘n’ roll from the left coas as it seems even the gritty stuff gets dilluted as LA rockers try to hard to be"LA Rockers". After scouring the web i have only found a few tracks from the Crystal Antlers, some from their live shows and some from their self released EP.

Damn you Crystal Antlers for only putting out 4 songs, damn you for being so raw, damn you for being stuck on repeat in my itunes cause all other summer music is sucking, damn you for not touring, and damn you if you turn into some manufactured LA rock.

Burberry Prorsum Spring 2009

fasterstill |

burberry prorsum Christopher Bailey has rolled out his new Spring 2009 collection for Burberry. The inspiration for the collection may seem a bit obscure to many but Bailey’s execution is spot on. His inspiration is the 1970’s British film director Derek Jarmen , who in the early 80’s was diagnosed with HIV. After Jarman’s diagnosis he moved to a cottage on the coast in Dungenness, Kent adjacent to a nuclear power plant.

Bailey’s "Crumpled Classics" focuses on Burberry classics like trench coats and outerwear piled over loose sweaters, wool gauze Tees and are topped with floppy Panama hats. Through the use of subtle color and the slouchy draping of his layers Bailey conveys the melancholy that perfectly suits his inspiration.
